Google Drive Introduces Built-in Video Editing with Google Vids
Google Drive has rolled out a brand-new feature that allows users to edit videos directly within the cloud. The update comes through the integration of Google Vids, a lightweight video editing tool designed for Workspace users. This new functionality is being gradually released over the next 15 days and will provide users with essential editing tools without the need for external software.
How the New Editing Tool Works
Once enabled, users will see a purple Google Vids icon in the top-right corner when opening supported video files in Google Drive. By clicking the icon, the video will open in Google Vids, where users can:
-
Trim video clips.
-
Add text overlays.
-
Insert background music.
-
Apply graphics and simple effects.
While the tool is limited to basic editing, the cloud-native interface makes it convenient for quick adjustments on the go. After editing, the file must be saved as a new Vids project, since in-place editing is not yet available.
Supported Formats and File Limits
Currently, Google Vids supports the following video formats: MP4, QuickTime, OGG, and WebM. However, only videos that are under 35 minutes in duration and smaller than 4GB in size can be edited within Drive.
Who Gets Access?
The video editing feature is not available for free Google accounts. It will only be accessible to users in specific Google Workspace domains, including:
-
Business Starter, Standard, and Plus
-
Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus
-
Essentials and Enterprise Essentials plans
-
Nonprofits
-
Gemini Education and Gemini Education Premium
-
Google AI Pro and Ultra
-
Customers with Gemini Business or Gemini Enterprise add-ons
