Islamabad to Offer Free WiFi at 35 Key Locations
Islamabad is set to become the first city in Pakistan to enjoy wide-scale free WiFi services, as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced the launch of internet hotspots at 35 major locations. The initiative will cover busy areas such as public markets, Metro and Electric Feeder Bus stations, and major parks, aiming to provide citizens with easy and reliable internet access.
CDA’s Digital Vision for the Capital
The decision was finalized during a meeting at CDA Headquarters, chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa. Officials confirmed that CDA’s technical team will fully assist the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) in executing the project. The NTC will also be responsible for operating and maintaining the system.
The ultimate goal is to transform Islamabad into a complete free WiFi city, making it the country’s pioneer in digital public connectivity.
Sustainability and Service Quality
Chairman Randhawa instructed that an operational and marketing model be designed to keep the service self-sustainable. Revenue generated from advertisements or partnerships will be reinvested into system upgrades and maintenance. He also stressed the importance of ensuring high-quality and uninterrupted connectivity for users.
First Step Towards a Digital Islamabad
Highlighting the government’s vision of a digitally connected Pakistan, Randhawa emphasized that all necessary resources will be deployed to provide modern facilities to residents of the federal capital. This initiative is expected to improve digital accessibility for students, professionals, and the general public alike.
Meeting Participants
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including NTC Managing Director Major General (R) Ali Farhan, CDA Member Finance Tahir Naeem, Member Planning Dr. Khalid Hafiz, Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza, and Director IT, among others.
