Pakistan Faces Rising Cybersecurity Threats as Hackers Intensify Attacks — CERT Issues Urgent Warning
The National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) Pakistan has sounded an urgent alarm over a sharp rise in cyberattacks targeting individuals, businesses, and government systems across the country.
In its latest advisory, CERT revealed that cybercriminals are exploiting peak internet usage periods and major upcoming events to launch large-scale phishing scams, deploy malware, set up fake websites, and infiltrate vulnerable networks. The agency warns that these highly coordinated and increasingly sophisticated attacks have significantly elevated Pakistan’s cybersecurity risk level.
Potential Damages Could Be Severe
CERT cautioned that successful breaches could cause widespread damage, including:
-
Financial losses from fake e-commerce transactions and fraudulent donation campaigns
-
Theft of personal and corporate data
-
System shutdowns and service disruptions
-
Reputation damage through website defacement or leaked information
The advisory also stressed that outdated systems and poorly segmented networks make it easier for hackers to gain access to multiple connected services after breaching one entry point.
Common Cyberattack Tactics in Pakistan
According to CERT, the most common methods currently used by hackers include:
-
Phishing emails disguised as official messages
-
Fake websites mimicking trusted brands and services
-
Malicious downloads hidden inside apps, documents, or software updates
-
Public Wi-Fi traps used to steal login credentials
Scammers are also using psychological manipulation, such as fake charity drives, event invitations, and attractive offers, to lure victims into clicking malicious links.
How to Protect Yourself and Your Organization
CERT has issued urgent recommendations to counter these threats:
For Individuals:
-
Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on all accounts
-
Keep all devices and software updated
-
Avoid using public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions unless connected via a VPN
-
Use strong, unique passwords for every account
For Organizations:
-
Patch and secure Content Management Systems (CMS) immediately
-
Deploy Web Application Firewalls (WAF)
-
Segment internal networks to limit breach impact
-
Restrict remote access and continuously monitor for suspicious activities
Immediate Action Required
CERT is urging both citizens and organizations to take immediate steps — including patching vulnerabilities, enabling MFA, keeping offline backups, and strengthening detection systems. The agency emphasized that public awareness and proactive security measures are Pakistan’s first line of defense.
Cyber incidents can be reported through CERT’s official portal, enabling a faster and coordinated national response to these growing threats.
