OGDCL Links Jhal Magsi Gas Project to SSGC Network, Boosting Pakistan’s Energy Supply
The Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has announced the successful commissioning of the Jhal Magsi Gas Development Project, marking an important step forward for Pakistan’s energy sector.
Located in Jhal Magsi, Balochistan, the field is now producing around 14 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of pipeline-grade gas along with 45 barrels per day (BPD) of condensate. This supply has officially been connected to the Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) system through a newly built 98-kilometer-long pipeline, ensuring a direct flow of gas into the national network.
Fast-Tracked Development Despite Challenges
The development phase of the project began in February 2024, after the Government of Pakistan approved special incentives. This included converting the field’s framework from the 1997 Petroleum Policy to the Marginal Field Gas Pricing Policy, aimed at maximizing output from smaller and underutilized fields.
Despite technical hurdles and remote location challenges, the project was completed on an accelerated schedule. The initiative highlights the government’s focus on enhancing domestic gas supply to meet the country’s rising energy demand and reduce reliance on costly imports.
Advanced Infrastructure Installed
As part of the project, OGDCL and its partners installed key infrastructure, including:
-
Amine and Dehydration Units for gas processing
-
Hot Oil Package and power generation facilities
-
Gathering systems for field operations
This modern setup ensures that the gas being supplied is pipeline quality and sustainable for long-term usage.
A Joint Venture for National Energy Security
The Jhal Magsi Field consists of two wells and is a joint venture between:
-
OGDCL – 56% working interest
-
Pakistan Oilfields Limited (POL) – 24% working interest
-
Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL) – 20% working interest
By connecting the Jhal Magsi gas reserves to the SSGC network, Pakistan takes another step toward strengthening its energy security, reducing shortages, and supporting industrial and domestic consumers.
